Swiss State Secretary joins 17th S&T Minsters’ Roundtable on the occasion of the STS forum

On October 3, Dr. Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation represented Switzerland at the 17th S&T Ministers’ Roundtable organized by the Government of Japan. The meeting took place on the occasion of the Science and Technology for Society Forum (STS forum) which was held online this year.

CEATEC Japan 2019 Participant Wingtra Awarded No. 2 at Top 100 Swiss Startup Award 2020

Cutis, Wingtra and Piavita were selected Switzerland’s most innovative and promising startup in 2020. The three young companies received the Top 100 Swiss Startup Award 2020 at the 10th edition of the Swiss Startup Award in Zürich on September 9, 2020.

Drone developer Wingtra was awarded for its outstanding “WingtraOne”, a fully autonomous mapping drone which can be used in inaccessible areas–and without any piloting skills. Its vertical take-off and landing feature allows the unmanned aerial vehicle to leave and return to any kind of terrain, and also to avoid belly landings.

New Call for Bridging Grants with Japan – Deadline 30 September 2020

Switzerland is currently accepting proposals for Bridging Grants with Japan. The call is aimed at building on existing collaboration between Japanese and Swiss researchers. Not only joint research projects but also past workshops or seminars that have been jointly organized would qualify. It is open to all scientific disciplines and fields of research. Selected proposals will receive up to CHF 25’000 for a maximum duration of 12 months. Applications will be accepted until September 30, 2020 (CET).

Cyber-Defence Fellowship Programs open for Japanese Talents in Switzerland – Deadline 31 August 2020
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the Swiss Cyber-Defense (CYD) Campus jointly launched a new fellowship program for Cyber-Defence Research to build the next generation of research leaders in cyber-security. The second call for proposals is now open. Citizens of any nationality are encouraged to submit applications. The program offers funding for 6-month Master theses, 4-year PhDs, and (up to) 2-year postdocs under the supervision of a professor at a Swiss higher education institution and a CYD Campus researcher.
Swiss “Handshake” attracts Japan, becomes top hit
Building on the innovative, partly physical, partly web-based project “Handshake” initiated by design duo AATB and swissnex Boston, a Switzerland-Japan-US online panel discussion was organized in collaboration with the Science & Technology Office Tokyo, Embassy of Switzerland in Japan. The tricontinental program resulted in “Japan” and “Tokyo” becoming the top two hits by far among destinations engaging with the Swiss demonstration which connected the world with real hand-shaped robots that could be accessed online for interaction with others.
