Prof. Gian-Luca Bona, CEO of the Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Science and Technology (Empa), gave an invited lecture at a symposium commemorating the 20th anniversary of the open access journal “Science and Technology for Advanced Materials (STAM)”. Empa co-publishes STAM with Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), which organized the symposium.
In his lecture on “International Journal and Open Data”, Prof. Bona touched upon the importance of open-access to research, citing the Swiss National Science Foundation’s policy that values research data sharing as a fundamental contribution to the impact, transparency and reproducibility of scientific research. Switzerland aims to make all scholarly publication open access by 2020.
He also highlighted the Swiss research community as an open labour market for researchers, with approximately 50% of PhD students, 45% of professors and 40% of all researchers coming from abroad.
The STAM 20th Anniversary Symposium on Open Science and Materials Research was part of the NIMS WEEK 2019, which took place between 28 October and 1 November.
