Japanese researchers aim to protect digital devices from cosmic rays
Computers dominate modern society, including smartphones, personal computers and control devices for machines, but they have an unexpected natural enemy: cosmic rays, high-speed particles raining down from outer space to Earth. Observers say cosmic rays can cause errors in computers, and various studies are under way at universities and major electronics manufacturers to address the issue.
Hitachi and GE to jointly develop next-generation reactors
Hitachi and General Electric Co. will jointly develop a new type of nuclear power plant with small modular reactors, sources said Monday.The two companies, longtime partners in the nuclear business, aim to commercialize the reactors, which they hope will be cheaper to produce and safer to run, by the 2030s, the sources said.
