As part of their study trip to Japan, the Civil Engineering students (Bachelor) of EPFL in Switzerland visited the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel, with support from the Science & Technology Office Tokyo. On September 12, 27 motivated students and two representatives of the Science and Technology Office Tokyo got on a bus and visited this impressive site in Saitama Prefecture, just outside of Tokyo. The discharge channel provides safety to the people living in the metropolitan area by collecting the overflow water from small- to mid-size rivers during periods of intense rainfall, retaining the water in five banks interconnected through the underground tunnel and a huge underground water tank, and finally releasing it to the extensive Edo River. After the explanation about the history and engineering design of the construction by guides, the participants went down into the pressure-adjusting water tank, which lies 22 meter below ground. The water tank is often called "the Underground Parthenon" or "the Underground Temple" from its gigantic shrine-like structure. The site visit was a unique experience that impressed and inspired not only the newly minted engineers but also the participants from the Science and Technology Office Tokyo.
