Empa CEO gives lecture at 20th anniversary symposium of open access journal
Prof. Gian-Luca Bona, CEO of the Swiss Federal Laboratories of Materials Science and Technology (Empa), gave an invited lecture at a symposium commemorating the 20th anniversary of the open access journal “Science and Technology for Advanced Materials (STAM)”. Empa co-publishes STAM with Japan’s National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), which organized the symposium.

Among the researchers honoured this year by the National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS) is Dr. Pierre Villars director of the company Material Phases Data System (MPDS) in Switzerland for his ground-breaking works in the field of “data-driven materials research and data infrastructure”. The NIMS award is presented every year since 2007 to researchers who made vital contributions to the furthering of materials sciences.

New cooling gloves help athletes beat heat
Electronics maker Sharp says it has come up with a new material based on its liquid crystal technology that could help athletes tackle the problem of overheating. It's being used in special gloves that can maintain a safe body temperature, even in hot weather.
