The Tokyo Motor Fes 2018 kicked off in Tokyo’s Odaiba waterfront district on Saturday for a three-day run.

Organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the event is designed to introduce the attractions of automobiles and motorcycles such as through allowing visitors to experience a test drive and the latest self-driving technologies.

Vehicles that were popular during Japan’s asset-inflated bubble economy period, including Nissan Motor Co.’s Cima, are exhibited in a program to look back on the current Heisei era, which started in 1989 and is set to end with the Emperor’s abdication on April 30 next year.

Race cars from Japan and abroad as well as “itasha” — vehicles decorated with images of video game and manga characters — are also featured in the event.

JAMA hopes to attract 140,000 visitors to the admission-free event, sponsored mainly by the Tokyo metropolitan government.

The Tokyo Motor Fes is held in years when the Tokyo Motor Show, which is a biennial event, does not take place.
