– Switzerland Investing in Life Sciences –
In a recent study KPMG compared six European countries which invest most in research in life sciences, namely the UK, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, France and Switzerland. Germany has the most LS companies (1,645), followed by the UK (868), France (863) and Switzerland (742). One aspect that is often overlooked is the strong presence in Switzerland of businesses specialised in medical technologies, especially implants. In fact they are more numerous (340) than those active in biotechnology (334) or pharmaceuticals (68).
In terms of the number of LS companies per capita, Switzerland is number one with 127 companies per one million active population, followed by the Netherlands with 41 and Ireland with 36. Germany (25), France (20) and UK (20) are just above the European average of 18. In terms of the number of employees per capita, Switzerland also heads the pack with approximately 15,000 employees in the LS industry per one million active population, followed by Ireland with 13,000. In France, in Germany, in the Netherlands and in the UK this value is in the region of 2,000 to 3,000.
