Swiss-Japanese “Hydrogen Technology and Energy Storage” Workshop

Swiss and Japanese researchers gathered already the second time  this year to exchange their ideas and research-results on the topic of Energy; after the “Energy Materials” workshop hosted at Empa and co-organized by ETH Zurich and JST in March of this year, researchers met again last week in Tokyo for the “Hydrogen Technology and Energy Storage” workshop.

The research event was opened by Session Chair Prof. Orimo (Tohoku University), as well as by representatives of the two co-organizing institutions, Dr. Rahel Byland (ETH Zurich) and Executive Director Dr. Shirokizawa (JST). The recently appointed Ambassador of Switzerland to Japan, H.E. Mr. Jean-François Paroz, pointed out in his opening speech that the scientific relations between Switzerland and Japan has been ongoing for more than 200 years – longer even than the more than 150 years old diplomatic relationship!

Empa Director Prof. Bona drew with his keynote dsc7555-1024x683speech the background picture to the workshop – he explained the importance of research on energy storage and hydrogen technology by using Switzerland’s energy landscape as an example.

There was plenty of room for networking during the breaks and receptions, and several of the Swiss researchers already found their research collaborators in Japan to continue their work – after all, global issues like the energy problems need global solutions! A special thank you for the perfect organization goes to Dr. Rahel Byland (ETH Zurich) and to Mr. Michael Vogelsanger (JST).
