– State Secretary Mauro Dell’Ambrogio meets Minister Hakubun Shimomura –
The Swiss State Secretary, Dr. Mauro Dell’Ambrogio met Hakubun Shimomura, Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT) at the Annual Meeting of the New Champions organized by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Dalian on September 12.
The meeting took place in the forefront of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations of the two countries in 2014. The discussion focused on the mutual interest of Switzerland and Japan to intensify their collaboration, particularly in the fields of education as well as research and development.
The Excellence Scholarships that were increased from one to two (and may hopefully become even more in the future) were mentioned favourably by both sides. The State Secretary expressed how important Japanese collaborations are for Switzerland, as outside of Europe, Japan is the most important research partner for Switzerland.
Japan is interested in scientific relations with Switzerland in regard to the domains of nanotechnologies and life sciences. In particular, there is a strong interest to intensify the cooperation in the medical field, because of the excellent quality of Swiss products and research in this area.
Further, discussions between the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and its Japanese counterpart, the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) has been welcomed by both countries.
In October the two politicians will join the Science and Technology in Society (STS) Forum in Kyoto, to discuss ongoing reforms and the role of science and technology to encourage economical growth.
