RIKEN SPring-8 celebrates 20 years in user operation

On October 13-14, RIKEN celebrated the 20th anniversary of its SPring-8 in user operation. Executives of counterpart institutions including Prof. Dr. Leonid Rivkin, Deputy Director of Switzerland’s Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) attended the ceremony together with high-level guests from industry and academia.

Prior to the ceremony on the first day, RIKEN offered a facility tour of the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. The highlight was the walk through the SACLA free-electron laser (XFEL) facility. The operations of the facility were stopped for half a day for the special guests!

RIKEN President Prof. Dr. Hiroshi Matsumoto gave the opening remarks for the Anniversary ceremony at Himeji Castle, a UNESCO world heritage site, and SPring-8 Director Dr. Tetsuya Ishikawa closed the evening.

The finale of the commemorative event was an international symposium attended by an impressive list of guests from counterpart institutions around the world. Attendees included the Director General of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the Chairman of the Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron, Scientific Director of the European XFEL as well as, the Directors of the Diamond Light Source, SOLARIS Synchrotron and SOLEIL Synchrotron.
