PMI Japan Datathlon wraps up with an International Symposium

On October 13th, a symposium was organized by Philip Morris International (PMI) to officially conclude its sbv IMPROVER datathon in Japan which asked researchers for biological interpretation of omics (genomics, proteomics and metabolomics) datasets. Scientists from Switzerland and Japan presented their research to a very international audience from Thailand, China, Indonesia as well as the two hosting countries.

After stressing out the importance of transparency and sharing of data, Dr. Manuel C. Peitsch, Chief Scientific Officer from PMI, presented “an assessment strategy for candidate modified-risk tobacco products.” He was followed by Dr. Stephanie Boue, Manager of Scientific Transparency and Verification at PMI who spoke about network-based systems toxicology. Dr Samik Ghosh, CTO of SBX Corp Japan, introduced intelligent platforms enabling Systems Toxicology such as Garuda, a connectivity platform allowing the researchers to share and connect to existing software and tools.

During lunch break, university teams presented their research in a poster session and enthusiastically explained their observations and conclusions to fellow scientists. Many of them were international students studying at the University of Tsukuba.

The datathon in Japan which ran from June to October 2017 was supported by the Science & Technology Office Tokyo who helped to reach out to potential participants by asking Japanese universities to inform their students and researchers. It was a great opportunity to promote scientific exchange between the Swiss researchers at PMI and young Japanese scientists.

PMI’s datathon and Symposium were part of the Sbv IMPROVER (standing for Systems Biology Verification combined with Industrial Methodology for Process Verification in Research) Project, the goals of which are to share and verify data, methods and concepts in systems biology research for applications in drug discovery, personalized medicine, and toxicological risk assessment.
