“Cheetah-Cub Robot”, the Fastest Cat-Like Robot
Developed by EPFL’s Biorobotics Laboratory (Biorob), the “cheetah-cub-robot” has specially designed legs to thoroughly reproduce feline morphology. Advantages are numerous; small size, light weight and fast locomotion are its key features, with added stability. The fastest in its category, this robot will serve as a platform for research in locomotion and biomechanics, and this concept could eventually be used for robots involved in rescue and search missions on natural disaster sites, as well as explorations.
In the last decade, studying and using features of the animal kingdom is receiving more and more attention by researchers, from robotics to material science, to develop new solutions and new applications. Auke Ijspeert, director of the Biorob, emphasized that this invention is the logical development of research the lab has done into locomotion that included a salamander robot and a lamprey robot.
